In audio during flight, Sala complains about plane and vents: “how scared I am”

In a concerned tone, missing striker complained about airplane conditions

In an audio sent to a group of friends through WhatsApp, soccer player Emiliano Sala reported about his flight, which was taking him from Nantes to Cardiff. The plane with the pilot and the athlete disappeared over the English Channel, and search teams are still looking for the aircraft until the publication of this article.

Sala spoke in a concerned tone in his message, but did not appear to be in an emergency situation. The striker complained about the condition of the aircraft: “I am here in a plane that looks like it’s about to fall to pieces,” said the striker.

A friend of the player, Diego Rolán, his former colleague at France’s Bordeaux who now plays for Spain’s Leganés, had already reported the existence of an audio sent during the flight: “[Sala] said he was scared, and that if they couldn’t find him, [his friend] should already know what had happened,” said Rolán to Uruguay’s 1010 AM radio.

Police forces in Guernsey, United Kingdom, are considering that, if the plane carrying the Argentine striker landed on water, the chances of finding any survivors are slim. The aircraft disappeared on Monday (22), while flying from France to Wales.

On Saturday (19), the 28-year-old player had been announced as Cardiff’s new reinforcement; the Welsh team is currently on the 18th place at the English Premier League. The small-size plane disappeared off the radars while flying over the English Channel. According to local police, searches have been made all through the night with a helicopter and lifeboats, but no traces of the airplane were found.

According to Rolán, the Argentinian player sent a message to a friend during the flight. “[Sala] said he was scared, and that if they couldn’t find him, [his friend] should already know what had happened,” said Rolán in an interview to Uruguay’s 1010 AM radio.

After a break during bad weather on Tuesday (22) morning, the rescue efforts were reinforced by more aircraft, but the search was interrupted once again during the afternoon. Sala played for Nantes since 2015, and scored 12 goals in the current season. Cardiff paid 17 million euros (R$ 72.5 million) for the player, who signed a three and a half year contract.

None of the clubs made any comments on the subject, but Nantes’ match for the Coupe de France on Wednesday (23) has been postponed.

The 28-year-old striker had just been transferred from Nantes to Welsh team Cardiff, which plays in the English league. Sala was in the plane due to the Welsh capital to sign his contract with the club.

Throughout his career, Sala practically only played in French soccer. He left Argentina while still playing for the youth leagues, in order to be a part of Bordeaux’s minor divisions. After being transferred to the club’s main team, he began to be loaned to smaller clubs, and eventually transferred to Nantes, in 2015.
