Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro will make his third visit to the United States since he took office; on his agenda, which will include an appearance at the United Nations General Assembly, is also a formal introduction of his son to president Donald Trump as the candidate to the office of Brazil’s ambassador to the US. The government of Santa Catarina is searching for passengers who were on a LATAM flight where a case of measles has been confirmed; several Brazilian states are undergoing an outbreak of the disease. President Jair Bolsonaro fired his press secretary less than a week after his appointment. Argentinian president Mauricio Macri, who is seeking reelection, has announced a set of measures destined to obtain the support of that country’s middle class, after his crushing defeat in the presidential election primaries this weekend. Finally, entertainment giants CBS and Viacom merged into a multibillion company in order to compete with streaming company Netflix.

On his third trip to the US, Bolsonaro will have a busy schedule
Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro will make his third visit to the United States in eight months of his term. Scheduled for September, the trip will have three main items on its schedule. First, Bolsonaro will go to the United Nations General Assembly, in New York; then, he will attend the 60-year anniversary ceremony of the Inter-American Development Bank, IADB; and, finally, he will formally present his son to US president Donald Trump as a potential candidate for the office of Brazilian ambassador in Washington D.C. Eduardo, however, must still be approved by the Brazilian Senate.
Santa Catarina searches for LATAM flight passengers suspected of having measles
The Florianópolis surveillance epidemiology bureau, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, is trying to locate passengers of LATAM flight LA3662 who flew from São Paulo to that city on August 3rd, who are suspected of traveling with symptoms of measles. A 20-year-old young man who was on the same flight has been admitted into a Florianópolis hospital with the disease. The bureau has already identified all the other passengers on the flight and recommended that they to go to a health center and get vaccinated. Several Brazilian states have been affected by a measles outbreak in the latest months.
Bolsonaro fires press secretary one week after appointment
The Planalto Palace press secretary has just been sacked, less than one week after being appointed by Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. Journalist Paulo Fona said in a statement to the press that he was surprised by the president’s decision. According to Fona, he had warned Bolsonaro about his “history” of having been a member of several different political parties, like MDB, PSDB, and PSB – the latter an active member of the opposition. His replacement has not been announced yet.
Fuel price freeze and four other measures announced by Macri
The electoral defeat suffered by Argentinian president Mauricio Macri, who is running for reelection, in Sunday’s primaries, has forced him to come up with measures in order to obtain votes in the election’s first round, scheduled for October 27th. This morning, he announced a set of measures focused on attracting votes from the middle class. Among these measures are financial bonuses for workers, extra social benefits for public servants, a raise on minimum salary, and a fuel price freeze for the next 90 days. According to Macri, the measures will not affect the government’s budget and will bring relief to 17 million workers and their families.
To beat Netflix, CBS and Viacom merge into a US$ 28 billion company
Today, United States media giants CBS and Viacom have announced a merger that will create a company with a total revenue of more than US$ 28 billion, ViacomCBS. The company will be created to compete with Netflix, and the US$ 11.7 billion transaction left 61 percent of its stocks to CBS shareholders. The deal will unite in the same conglomerate TV channels like CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Showtime, as well as movie studio Paramount Pictures. Along with the cable TV market, the new company will also invest in streaming services.
