The roundtable about supply and demand for soybeans, corn and sorghum in the regional and global context brought on stage the debate on grains during the 1st South American Forum of Agriculture. The presentation was opened by market analyst Paul Andreani (photo) of AgriPAC Consultores SRL (Argentina), who commented on the evolution of soybean production in South America compared to the United States.

While Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia managed to increase the oleaginous production from 38.4 million tons in 1995/96 to 164.9 million tonnes for 2013/14 , the United States have expanded their harvest in just 29.4 million tons. Plus, during the same period, South America increased from 31 percent to 58 percent its participation in the world market. "And in the future we have the potential to increase the stake to 70 percent", Andreani said.

Likewise, INTL FC Stone market analyst Glauco Monte, discussed the outlook for the corn market. The global demand for corn grains should be maintained, but it will be lower than the one for soybean. According to the specialist, the remarkable growth of the Brazilian production in recent years has placed Brazil in a prominent position within the international corn market, but even with the decline of the American harvest, both the United States and China remain as the major players since they represent almost 70 percent of the world production.
